Featured Artist Friday: Meet Cristina!
Posted on February 03 2017
Cristina Vanko is a hand-letterer, illustrator, and art director from Chicago. She is also the author of Hand-Lettering for Everyone and Adult-ish (releases April 2017) with Penguin Random House.
We asked Cristina a few questions to help us get to know her more + here's what she said:
What are your biggest struggles with being an artist?
I'm always pushing myself to keep learning to keep up with the latest trends, tools, and programs.
But for some reason, the pen tool on illustrator has always been a struggle for me.
Do you have a favorite type of music or artist you listen to while creating?
Lately I've really been to Sylvan Esso while working. Kendrick Lamar is another fave.
What are your biggest goals for this year?
Taking a daily vitamin! Other than that, I want to create more passion projects and to write another book!
What is the best advice another artist gave to you?
Don't overwork it. Sleep. Take a break. Come back after a while and take another look.
Taking a step back and having fresh eyes has always helped.
Anything you wish people understood more about your work and process?
I sketch as long as possible before moving to the computer.
There's a certain magic to see what the hand can create organically before digitizing art.
