Featured Artist Friday: Meet Katie
Posted on September 15 2017
Katie is a yoga-loving, puppy-snuggling, sunshine-fueled hand-letterer from Pennsylvania. Her earliest memories are of crafting and creating and she started Sweet Lou Designs in 2015 as an outlet to share her love of art and inspirational words. Sweet Lou Designs is all about handmade wood signs, cards, prints and more for the everyday dreamer and believer. Katie hopes to spread love and light through hand-lettered words and pretty designs.
We asked Katie a few questions to help us
get to know her more + here's what she said:
How does a typical day progress for you? / Do you have any morning rituals?
I am currently working full time at an office job, so my day typically starts at 630, off to the office. After I get home, I make dinner and spend some time with my bestie-soulmate Tyler and our sweet pup and kitty, Sadie and Steve. Most nights I then head up to my studio (read: desk in the corner of the guest bedroom) to work on Sweet Lou Designs and practice yoga. I wish I had a better morning ritual! It's in the works. Currently it looks like hitting snooze, getting ready for work and making coffee. I love sipping my coffee and listening to podcasts on the way to work. My goal for 2017 is to grow this biz and pursue Sweet Lou full time!
How do you kick off a new week with a fresh start?
Sundays in general are usually a quiet day at home, spent snuggling and catching up on projects and making dinner together. After dinner I like to journal and put together my thought and to-dos for the week ahead. I say my prayers of gratitude for all the blessings in my life and for guidance to be the best version of me.
What kind of influence or role do you believe art currently has in society?
Huge! So much is just built into our daily lives - fashion, interior design, books, journals, your coffee mug! But I believe it is widely unappreciated, which is a shame. It's a blessing to pause and take in all the beauty. At least in my world, I am surrounded by art, especially with social media. It is amazing to watch it bring people together, to see community grow through creativity.
Do you do any research or look for inspiration when starting new work?
I try not to! I tend be very influenced by others and can get sucked into what everyone else is doing and lose sight of my own ideas. The only research I do is for quotes and verses that inspire me.
Anything you wish people understood more about your work and process?
Handmade is a treasure and it takes time! I truly put my heart and soul into my work. At least for now, my art is not my full-time gig so I source, design, create, market, ship, etc etc in the hours outside of the 9-5 and I do it by myself. I am always learning and growing in my creativity and business.
What do you love to paint/draw/design most?
Alll the letters! With the occasion leaves and flowers. I love lower case d's and a really swoopy capital A. I also love working with watercolors most. They are so dreamy and forgiving and versatile.
What is the best advice another artist gave to you?
Just do you and create from the heart. There are so amazing amazing artists out there, just do what you love, create from your soul and let your light shine.
What are your biggest struggles with being an artist?
Not being overly influenced by others (#socialmedia) and balancing my art with the rest of my life. I want to escape to my studio 24/7 so finding the balance of work, life and play is a constant dance!
Do you have a favorite type of music or artist you listen to while creating?
My taste in music is all over the place, so some nights it's all mellow and acoustic and alternative, sometimes it's Ed Sheeran, sometimes my guilty pleasure country, sometimes dancey with the Chainsmokers. It all depends on what I'm working on and what mood I'm in.
What are your biggest goals for this year?
By the end of this year, I am hoping to take Sweet Lou Designs full time. My goal is to expand my business into wholesale and partner with local shops to sell. I also have a number of new products and designs in the works to include shirts, more totes and stationary in the brand. Dreams are coming true, I'm excited!
