Featured Artist Friday: Meet Tara!

Posted on March 10 2017

My name is Tara and I am a hand letter and designer just trying to add rad things to the world that make people happy. I live with my little family in Huntington Beach, CA, am a lover of b&w, chocolate bar donuts, and filling my life with creative goodness.

We asked Tara a few questions to help us get to know her more + here's what she said:

1. How does a typical day progress for you? / Do you have any morning rituals?
Wake up. Read Scriptures. Check how my scheduled post on Instagram is doing. Check emails. Wrangle/enjoy my kids till nap time. Nap time hustle where I try to squeeze some work in. Kids wake up. Play and hang out with them. Make dinner. Husband comes home. He takes the kids and helps put them to bed. We all say family prayers together. Get back to work till about 11pm.

2. Do you do any research or look for inspiration when starting new work?
Pinterest can be amazing but most the time it makes me feel down on myself and it doesn’t really spark creativity. Drives at night by myself and walking around stores alone are actually two of my favorite things to gain inspiration. It helps clear my head and look at something new besides the walls of my own home. And then I just get to work. Sometimes you are lucky enough for inspiration to just come to you. But most of the time, it will come after hours of a pen in your hand working you butt off.

3. Anything you wish people understood more about your work and process?
Letters are art! Look at each and every letter and how truly beautiful they are. The way the work together and flow. SO much emotion can be shown just by making the littlest style changes in a letter. They really are amazing.

4. What do you love to paint/draw/design most?
I love combining spunk with beauty. And the fact that you can achieve both with just a hand lettered font is so dang fun.

5. What is the best advice another artist gave to you?
Just keep moving forward. No matter what. No matter how many fails or bad days you have.. Keep creating. Keep moving forward. It all works out.

6. What are your biggest struggles with being an artist?
Right now at this time in my life, it’s the balance of being a mom and a creative. Both of which I could dedicate 100% of my time to. Being a mom is my #1 and I know I won’t ever regret the quality time spent with my kids, but art fills my soul. And it helps me appreciate life and the beautiful things around me in the everyday. So I feel they can work together but the idea of a perfect balance isn’t reality. So accepting that and being ok with it can be a straggle at times.

7. Do you have a favorite type of music or artist you listen to while creating?
Peaceful piano music or rock. Haha. Basically it is all over the board. But most of the time my head is so loud with thoughts, music overwhelms me. So a lot of the time I work without music if I am super concentrating.
